Introducing our exclusive Commemorative Bicycle Day Stamp #200 – a limited-edition collection honouring the historic LSD discovery.
What is Bicycle Day?
Bicycle Day is an annual event that commemorates the discovery of the psychedelic effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). It is celebrated on April 19th each year. Bicycle Day marks the day when Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann intentionally ingested a small dose of LSD for the first time in history.
On April 19, 1943, Albert Hofmann, a researcher at the Sandoz pharmaceutical company, accidentally absorbed a small amount of LSD through his fingertips while working with the compound in the laboratory. He began to experience unusual and powerful psychoactive effects, including vivid hallucinations, altered perceptions of time and space, and a heightened sense of awareness.
Hofmann’s experience prompted him to conduct further experiments with LSD, leading to its recognition as a potent psychedelic substance. The bicycle part of Bicycle Day’s name comes from the fact that on that fateful day in 1943, Hofmann, still under the influence of LSD, rode his bicycle home from the lab, and this bike ride has become an iconic part of the story.
Bicycle Day is observed by some as a day to celebrate the history and culture of psychedelics, to promote awareness of the potential therapeutic uses of psychedelic substances, and to advocate for responsible and safe use. It has gained significance in the broader context of psychedelic research and the exploration of altered states of consciousness.
